Your article is an excellent alert to keep watching Trump like a demon who springs from nowhere into the center of the screen in a horror movie.

Democrats should try to convict Trump by postponing the February 8 impeachment date and do a more thorough impeachment investigation before bringing the case to trial (instead of allowing him to claim he was “acquitted” and thus legitimize in the eyes of his followers the scenario you warn us about). The investigatory heat should be kept on Trump in every way. As the months go by, he will be facing a rape charge, his financial problems and other legal quagmires. As new evidence emerges against Trump and as he becomes bogged down in his other legal and financial quagmires over the next months, his influence over the Republican Party may wane. If it doesn’t, another set of problems arises which need to be addressed.

If the impeachment trial can’t be postponed, the Democrats and the few Republicans they can peel away should switch gears and do a censure of Trump with some real teeth in it: they should attach very targeted legislation to it that would severely curb presidential power; as well as leave section 3 of the 14th Amendment as an open option if Trump starts to stir up trouble. Impeachment may not be necessary, as this strategy would solve the problem.

I have written more extensively about this strategy and the national security concerns that should be taken into account regarding the impeachment process in The War After the Election [].There is a link at the end of it that explains the legislation to curb presidential power in a more universal way.

The article also summarizes the findings of the Transition Integrity Project, a group that included former Congressmen, United States Senators, previous cabinet members, White House Chiefs of Staffs, Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security and state governors whose “war games” in June of 2020 predicted almost exactly what happened after the election which led to the attack on the Capitol on January 6.
