Don’t be sure that Trump won’t still be held politically accountable. Like you say, there is a high bar for impeachment for good reason. But as you also say, this must not be allowed to pass.
It is possible that there will be a censure of Trump, perhaps in conjunction with section 3 of the 14th Amendment (which would prevent him from running for office again). This would only require a few of the seven Republicans who voted to convict regarding impeachment to vote to censure, as this approach would only require a majority, not the 2/3 supermajority that impeachment does. This strategy is actually politically possible and I am continually updating it along with other ways to curb excessive presidential power as events evolve in The War After the Election [https://medium.com/illumination-curated/the-war-after-the-election-545de96aa4ca?sk=627c55d616d9296af3e398f1686493a4].
The article also discusses that the Justice Department is considering using RICO statutes to tie a conspiracy web around not just Trump but the other actors who led up to the Capitol attack on January 6. So along with the criminal NAACP civil suit and many more civil and criminal suits that will be coming, justice may well be served.
