As much of a mess as the electoral system is, even the Electoral College has evolved. Electors in virtually all states are bound to uphold the popular vote within their states (as opposed to 1824 when six of the twenty-four states did not even conduct a popular vote and instead let state legislatures choose their electors).

The problem in the 2020 election will arise if President Trump can convince state legislators that the vote in their individual state was “rigged” and thus to deviate from the modern tradition of electors abiding by the popular vote.

The Pledge to Safeguard the Election (https://www.thepledge.site/pledge-to-safeguard-the-election) attempts to counter this by digging deeper into the grit of the electoral process to make sure that electoral officials follow the same rules that have been applied to previous modern elections.

Cast your votes on the House and local levels with this in mind and then follow through AFTER the election to make sure the normal process is followed by keeping pressure on electoral officials of all kinds at all levels. We need to wake up NOW during this election (which might extend until January under the worst-case scenarios). If mail-in ballots are challenged, the results are closer than expected and President Trump then begins to manipulate the electoral college or attempts to move the process to the House, we will indeed begin moving towards authoritarianism.

A fuller explanation for how to counter this can be found in the Medium ILLUMINATION-curated articles “Stop the Coming Election Crisis” (https://medium.com/illumination-curated/sign-the-pledge-to-safeguard-the-election-b4daae7efd93) and “Wake Up America!
